Salesforce Summer '16 Release: What You Need to Know

May 12, 2016

Salesforce’s 50th release is struck by lightning.

The Summer ‘16 release focuses heavily on the user interface, cleaner data, and increased Lightning functionality. Salesforce continues to build new functions in Lightning as well as bring in functions from Salesforce Classic that are widely popular. Here are the top 5 things you need to know about this release and how they’ll change your Salesforce use.

Contacts Associated with Multiple Accounts

Prior to this release, contacts could only be related to multiple accounts through the Contact Roles object. Now, contacts can be associated to different accounts with Contacts to Multiple Accounts, and additional details about their relationship within each account can be noted. Rather than creating duplicate contacts for the same person on multiple accounts, the Contacts to Multiple Accounts feature allows the consolidation of this data into one contact record. This improves data quality by reducing the need for repeated data input and gives users a better understanding of their customer.

New Views and Use of Data

Different chart types allow for the presentation of data in a way that makes sense visually. New chart types are available in reports. These include: Funnel, Scatter, Combo, Cumulative, and Line. With data’s growing role in decisions across departments in every business, the ability to clearly present it is a necessity.

The ability to export reports as Excel spreadsheets is now available in Lightning, eliminating the need to switch back to Salesforce Classic every time you need to post a report file in Chatter.

Execute Action Groups on Multiple Criteria

This change might be our favorite. Now you can see your entire automation process in one place and control it from one Process Builder Workflow. Previously you could only execute actions on the first set of criteria that evaluated to true in your Process Builder Workflow. Now, you can either stop after executing the action group or evaluate the next criteria. This is akin to chaining multiple criteria and action groups together like an approval process. The benefit of this update is longer, more complex processes that require multiple decision points to be evaluated can be handled in a single process, where it may have taken 2 or more previously.

Customized UI

The homepage in Lightning is now customizable and can be assigned by profile. This increases the value of end users’ landing pages by allowing an admin to personalized the information displayed based on what is most relevant for each group of users.

Page layouts have also gained additional flexibility in Lightning. Now Admins can change the entire page layout beyond just the fields and related lists, by dragging and dropping to add components and rearrange the page to the most optimized view for users.

Sandbox Cloning

Full metadata deployment is no longer required to create a sandbox with the same features as another. Sandbox Cloning is brand new and it’s available in both Lightning and Classic. This is a huge time saver as it allows for admin users to easily replicate your team’s work it in a different sandbox and continue development there.

While not a new feature, a change worth noting is the way Salesforce Lightning will now be offered. The traditional editions have been streamlined and renamed Lightning Professional, Lightning Enterprise, and Lightning Unlimited. This gives companies more options in purchasing only the features they need and makes the pricing of Lightning much more competitive.
