However, to fully receive the value from the Beyond program, our customers will sometimes need to take a little risk. As we develop a strong relationship and build your trust, we help guide you through this risk.
In some ways, Beyond’s role can be described similarly to that of a backcountry guide who leads hikers to those special places we escape to in our off-time. A couple of years ago, I hiked part of the John Muir trail in Kings Canyon National Park in California's Sierra Nevada. After several days of arduous hiking — upwards of 40 miles tracked — I was very much looking forward to the final night's camp destination: some hot springs right across the San Joaquin River from the trail. To get there, however, we had to cross a pretty large stretch of the river.
Earlier in the hike, we had a small river crossing, so we thought utilizing the same strategies to cross that river would serve us well on this next one. Perhaps we could use a trekking pole to balance ourselves. And we should take our boots off and tie them to the top of our backpacks. That was our plan. Eventually, with our limited strategy, we began the crossing.
The river was strong and cold. The rocks were very slippery. The trekking pole didn't help; the whole endeavor was a balancing act. When we finally found ourselves on the other side of the river, we reflected on the challenge of fording that river — it hadn’t even occurred to us that had we slipped and fallen, our heavy packs would have pulled us to the bottom! The fact that this risk was pondered after we crossed was a pretty big oversight.
The rest of our journey to the hot springs required some bushwhacking and trailfinding through mud and other obstacles. Upon arrival, we saw a group of folks already in the pools — people that we’d passed miles back. Curious as to how they got there so quickly, we inquired about their strategy. It was simple: they had a guide who was familiar with the area, and knew of a shallow river crossing. He instructed them to carry some lightweight sandals that helped to stabilize them on the rocks. Furthermore, he ensured that they carried their packs high, so that if they fell, they wouldn't be pulled under.
In other words, he provided them with the expertise that helped get them to those hot springs in a quick, efficient, and safe fashion. They, in turn, didn't have to spend hours trying to figure out strategies ad hoc, waste time, or endanger themselves. In addition, they got to enjoy the hot springs, while we waited, still sore, kicking ourselves for not making use of a guide’s expertise.
With Bluewolf Beyond, our customers come to us with their plans to achieve a desired objective. In some cases, this may get them across the river successfully, without incident.
