Obama Ignores Tech in Jobs Speech

September 13, 2011

Technology workers got the short shift in President Obama's jobs speech, unlike in his State of the Union speech last January in which he mentioned "technology" 11 times. He used the "T" world only once last night. With an unemployment rate of 3.7%, the second lowest of all major industries, perhaps tech workers don't need help.

What the president could have addressed and didn't, is the millions of workers who don't have the skills to get a job in one of the economy's few growing industries. There is a mismatch between the abilities of many job seekers and available jobs, business leaders and economists say. The president did talk about a plan to train 10,000 additional engineers a year, but details were fuzzy.

That's why Eric Berridge, CEO of the recruiting firm Bluewolf, says he was disappointed with the president's speech. Of Bluewolf's 4,600 job placements last year, about 36% of jobs went to foreign-born workers, Berridge says. It's not that companies hire H-1B workers because they can be paid less, he says, but because there simply aren't enough Americans to fill the expanding number of tech jobs being created.

"What was lacking were specifics around training people in the skillsets that are in huge demand in the economy right now," Berridge said.
