Widespread adoption of cloud and other flexible technologies is shaking things up in Enterprise IT. Research firm Gartner predicts that in 2014 the penetration of cloud will nearly double. There are many exciting benefits to adopting flexible technologies, such as automation and scalability. The rapid shift in resources from on-premise infrastructure to the cloud, legacy software to SAAS, and PAAS, and the flood of API’s to the market is challenging traditional IT departments and shifting the dynamic of the workforce.

By definition, any technology that promises greater automation and the ability to do more with less has the potential to shift the roles of internal staff, especially IT. A recent Mckinsey study noted that even though the amount of people in the workforce has decreased steadily since 2008, companies are, in fact, more productive.
