DF13 Live Blog: Salesforce1—Benioff's Big Release

November 19, 2013

This morning salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff delivered his Dreamforce keynote to thousands of attendees in Moscone South. Over the course of two and a half hours, Benioff and Co. painted a portrait of salesforce.com’s vision and unveiled a new product, Salesforce1. Salesforce.com brought out the big guns for this one. To start the keynote, Benioff highlighted the Salesforce Foundation – the company’s CSR branch. This year, Salesforce Foundation focused on Haiti, helping the nation rebuild after a devastating earthquake in 2010. Accompanied by the Prime Minister of Haiti, Sean Penn, and supermodel/philanthropist Petra Nemcova, Benioff told of salesforce.com’s involvement in repairing the island nation.

Next, was a performance by Huey Lewis and the News—not too shabby for a tech conference.

Returning to enterprise software, the latest offering from salesforce.com was debuted. Salesforce1 is positioned as an all inclusive mobile solution for the Salesforce Platform. Recently, “the internet of things,” has become a popular expression to describe the interconnectivity of devices that were previously offline. Behind this wealth of data and connected devices are customers, says Benioff, and Salesforce1 provides organizations the power to sell, service, and market to them like never before.

The combination of Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, and Marketing Cloud in one user-friendly mobile app is a game-changer for customer engagement. Responding to what salesforce.com calls “the internet of customers,” Salesforce1 provides a dynamic customer engagement platform spanning the complete customer lifecycle.

So, as a Salesforce customer or member of the ecosystem, what do you need to know about this new offering? Here are the five viewpoints on this new offering.

  1. Developers
    1. This new mobile platform is all about APIs—there are 10x the APIs in Salesforce1.
  2. ISVs (Partners)
    1. Native apps are all the rage. Salesforce.com’s flourishing AppExchange is testament to in increase in platform accessibility to outside partners.
  3. End Users
    1. Salesforce1 still boasts the same functionality of all previous offerings, this time in the palm of your hand. Engage with your Salesforce instance and your customers anytime, anywhere, on your own device.
  4. Admins
    1. Along with the official release of Salesforce1, comes SalesforceA. This admin-specific app allows for streamlined admin access and admin functionality from mobile devices.
  5. Customers
    1. When Sales, Service, and Marketing are all combined under one roof it’s the customers that win big. This dynamic offering enables a slick 1:1 relationship between organizations and their customers.

If you thought that celebrities and rockstars were the only trick up Benioff’s sleeve, you’d be mistaken.
