What was the most valuable piece of career advice that you received?
Don’t be limited by what you know and what you studied. The career path you set out on may be completely different to where you end up. Don’t be discouraged by this; it’s not what you know today, it’s what you want to know tomorrow.
What was the worst piece of business advice that you received?
Someone once told me that when you get to a certain level you can only do 10% of your job. This shouldn’t be something to aspire to. I actually try to do as much as possible and then delegate. If you’re setting an example of resting on your laurels, there’s no incentive for your team to be motivated and engaged. Lead by example and push towards the best outcomes for your organisation, collectively.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the tech industry?
At Bluewolf we challenge our graduates to get involved in all aspects of the business. You may end up honing your skills within a very specific role, but it is also key to have an overview of the overall business. When you understand how different departments work separately and in tandem to drive results, you become more knowledgeable and valuable to your organisation.
